About 30 miles north of the city, the national park has two mountain ranges, over 130 named lakes, more than 1,000 different plant species, and hundreds of animal species. The expansive park is a uniquely pure ecosystem, spreading over 1,584 square miles of land. In permitted areas of the park, hiking, fishing, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing are popular activities. Kalispell is also seven miles north of Flathead Lake, the largest natural freshwater lake to the west of the Mississippi. The resort is located at Big Mountain, northwest of Glacier National Park in the Flathead National Forest. After Big Sky, the resort is the 2nd-largest ski area in Montana.

Flathead County
The county is named for the Flathead Lake, which derives its name from the Salish (Flathead) Indians. There are three cities in the county, including Kalispell, Columbia Falls and Whitefish. As of 2006, the county is home to 85,314 residents. A famous resident of Flathead County is Maury Povich, talk show host of Maury. He and his wife, a television journalist, helped start the Flathead Beacon, a weekly newspaper and online news source for the Montana Flathead Valley.
